Counselling FAQ’S

Frequently Asked Questions

  • In Ontario, psychotherapists and psychologists are mental health professionals but have different training and qualifications. Psychotherapists specialize in providing therapy and counselling services, while psychologists often have additional training in psychological assessment and testing.

  • Deciding if therapy is right for you depends on your personal circumstances and needs. Some common signs that therapy may be beneficial include feeling overwhelmed, experiencing persistent sadness or anxiety, difficulty coping with stress, relationship problems, or a desire for personal growth and self-exploration. A therapist can help you determine if therapy is appropriate for your situation.

  • Counseling helps you explore and understand the cultural and racial differences that shape your relationship. We’ll create a space where you both can openly share your experiences and feelings, while learning to appreciate each other’s backgrounds. Together, we’ll develop strategies to communicate more effectively, validate each other’s perspectives, and find common ground so these differences can strengthen your relationship, not create division.

  • It’s common for families to have strong opinions about interracial or interfaith relationships, and that can be tough. In counselling, we’ll explore how family expectations affect your relationship and help you set healthy boundaries. You’ll learn ways to navigate these dynamics while protecting your connection. My role is to help you strengthen your bond so you can handle external pressures as a couple.

  • Yes, absolutely. In counseling, I can help you explore and address concerns from family or your community that might be affecting your relationship. Together, we’ll work on setting healthy boundaries, finding ways to stay connected to each other, and building strategies to maintain a strong and loving partnership, even when faced with disapproval.

  • The frequency of therapy sessions depends on your individual needs and goals, as well as the recommendation of your therapist. Initially, sessions may be scheduled weekly or biweekly to establish rapport and work through immediate concerns. As progress is made, sessions may be spaced out to every few weeks or once a month.

  • Therapy sessions typically last around 50 minutes to one hour, although the duration may vary depending on the approach and your specific needs. Longer sessions may be arranged for couples or specialized therapies.

  • In counseling, I provide a safe and empathetic space where you can openly talk about experiences with racism, discrimination, or bias. These are difficult but important conversations, and I approach them with care and understanding. My goal is to help you explore how these experiences impact you both individually and as a couple, so you can navigate these challenges together.

  • No, you don’t need to belong to any specific faith or culture to seek counseling. I welcome couples from all backgrounds, beliefs, and identities. Our work together focuses on your unique experiences and relationship, and how we can best support you in navigating the challenges and joys that are specific to you both. Every couple’s journey is different, and my goal is to honor and support yours, no matter where you come from.

  • Yes, therapy is confidential in Ontario. Psychotherapists are bound by legal and ethical obligations to protect the privacy and confidentiality of their clients. However, there are legal exceptions to confidentiality, such as when there is a risk of harm to yourself or others. Your therapist will explain the limits of confidentiality during the initial sessions.

  • Psychotherapy services are not covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). However, many private insurance plans offer coverage for therapy services. It's advisable to check with your insurance provider to understand your coverage and any reimbursement options for therapy.

  • Your appointment time is reserved just for you. A late cancellation of less than 24 hours or missed visit leaves a hole in the therapists’ day that could have been filled by another client. As such, I require 24 hours-notice for any cancellations or changes to your appointment. Those who provide less than 24 hours-notice, or miss their appointment, will be charged a cancellation fee. Cancellation fees are the amount of the full regular private fee for the service.

This cancellation fee cannot be claimed and reimbursed by your extended health plan. My receipt for the charge will state that it is a cancellation fee.
